So, what can we learn from this overplayed song? i decided to look up the lyrics, and really look into what i felt it meant, and why it moves us so much. Here's my thoughts . . . .
"The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation,
And it looks like i'm the queen."
How many times have we felt isolated?Whether we do it to ourselves, or we are left out by others. We feel no one can understand, like we are the queen, or king of this solitude. No footprints coming to check on us, or look for us. Like we are forgot in the midst of this busy world, and we can't be seen. invisible. A horrible feeling, and we've all been there. As humans, we need interaction, and to be "seen". Seen can mean many things, you can see me, and know nothing about me. Or you can see the real me, which is scary, but deep down we all crave it.
"The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn't keep it in heaven knows i tried!"
Sometimes we try so hard to keep it together. Heaven forbid we be vulnerable! And yet, at times, we just want to burst.
"Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know . . . "
isn't that just the problem, that we do conceal? We don't want anyone to see who we are. What if they reject us? How will we handle it? As a culture, we are taught from a very young age to hide. Hide emotions, don't be sad, deal with it. As the quote says, "put your big girl panties on and deal with it!" The world looks down on asking for help. i feel that is why it is hard for us to rely on God, because we are told we need to do it ourselves. Oh, and if you can't, then you are just too weak!
"Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam that door!"
What freedom we feel when we can let go. Drop the masks, and be who we are. God wants that for us. He wants us to let it go! Slam the door! Let it go and don't look back! Let go of the resentment, the fakeness, the heavy load. As the saying goes let go, and let God. He can't heal, or change what you are still holding onto.
"i don't care
What they're going to say..."
When your approval comes from God, the need for others to approve of you is gone! And in there lies your freedom!
" it's funny how some distance
Makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me
Can't get to me at all!"
When you let go, and let God, you can get perspective, rather than drowning in your problems. He can give you a clear mind to guide you. Things that once overwhelmed you don't seem so large, and start to seem more manageable. Really, what can't you manage with God on your side? Creator of the universe!
"i'm never going back
The past is in the past!"
it says in the bible that when you come to God, ask for forgiveness, and it is gone! No stain left on your soul. Gone! The past is behind you, it is gone, leave it alone. Why focus on something we can't change? Focus on the road ahead. Don't go backwards!
"The perfect girl is gone!"
Perfection is unattainable, and false. Doesn't exist! And God never asked it of us. Don't strive for it, or you will always fall short, and always be disappointed.
Remember, these are my thoughts.
i feel after re-reading these lyrics over and over again, i will treasure this annoying song a bit more.
